New 27inch monitor for the MBP

Dropped in to PC Express in Riverwood to see Jing who always looks after me with PC related purchases.

I’ve picked up a huge 27inch monitor for the macbook pro for a bargain in comparison to a mac monitor at $1200.

#frustration. Got the monitor to work today, all excited only to find the guy at the JB HI-FI sold me the wrong dongle! Grr!

There’s a big price gap but the specs are pretty different as well. Those 27 inch Apple monitors do 2560 x 1440 res. Pretty nuts.

  2. Mark says:

JF, did you consider the 27″ UltraSharp Dell U2711?

  3. Justin Fox says:

Hmm didn’t consider anything but the Samsung as I had one for years before and loved it, just hope it’s AOK, will know tomorrow!

  4. Alan says:

Carmen got me a Dell Ultrasharp U2711 and its quite nice. It also does 2560×1440, and is about 2/3 the price of the Apple.

Unless you were looking specifically for a Thunderbolt display, the Dell is a pretty good buy for the pixel density.

Justin, I know you do heaps of design work so how does the colour gamut fair on the monitors? Or you just after bang for your buck? I’ve always been lured in by sales but everyone in the industry tells me if you’re after colour correction you need an Eizo or NEC monitor.

Dell Ultrasharp U2711 has exactly the same panel as the Apple. :D win win win.

  7. Justin Fox says:

Ah bugger sounds like the Dell would have been the go then, we’ll see tomorrow. I am sure the Samsung will be fine guys.

  8. matthew says:

seriously MR FOX. your going to compare the two?
after this amount of years you still fight quality?

i tried a different monitor to a mac 27″. just wasted money and time.
its not about price its about the quality of the screen and the colour

yep the dell is a contender… but it’s a dell.
next you’ll be driving a white commodore VL – yeah it’ll go as fast as the golf … but it’s still a commodore/dell

  9. Mark says:

JF, If you want to buy dell and you are member with NRMA, 15% discount. So the $899 goes down to $764.

Honestly, the UltraSharps are quality displays. And once in a while there is sales – it went down to ~$600 recently.

Yep, Dell Ultrasharp FTW. I have an elderly 2405FPW hooked up to my new MacBook Pro 15″ (well it’s all works gear but anyway…) The only problem is that the MacBook won’t or can’t put the 2405 into sleep mode, so when the display goes to sleep on the MacBook, the 2405 just flashes “2: DVI-D Can not display this mode”.

Others have the same problem with this display + MacBook Pro. I got around it by having the mac go to sleep instead. It wakes up so quick you don’t even notice.

A more modern display (the 2405FPW is nearly 7 years old!) probably won’t have this problem.

  11. Justin Fox says:

Guys it’s up and running and looking fine to me! Sure it’s not quite the same as the iMac back home in this resolution but it shits all over working on the MBP screen and at a fair chunk under $500 I won’t mind so much if it gets stolen from the warehouse!!!
