Fishing the Hawkesbury River

Our house boat. Not cheap but it had everything we needed, and more.

Stevey at the wheel. After a very quick rundown by the staff we were set free.

Stevey (James Bond) proudly wearing his lucky charms.

My new rod. It’s a little too big for small fish (making it less fun than a small flexy rod when catching small fish) but hey, we were here to catch monster fish (as Zi put it, big bait big fish!).

Chris was the first to catch something, this little brimmy was way to small to keep and was set free.

Willy with a small Port Jackson shark (one of a few caught and of-course set free). Such a beautiful fish (to me anyways!).

My monster catch!

We parked up next to this pimp boat in Jerusalem Bay.

Colin going for a swim.

Sunset.

As night took over the nocturnal monsters came out to play. Rays, eels, catfish… Zi was reeling all sorts of freaky shit in.

Morning fog.

Brekky time.

So how? Willy was our resident fishing expert. His tackle box was the most comprehensive I’ve ever seen and he had a billion rods too.

Spent last night on the Hawkesbury River on a house boat with the boys (plus Mei, Collin’s girl who really looked after us with all the yummy food!). The mission was to catch a 1metre long 10kg monster Jewfish (Willy says someone always does every week out on the Hawkesbury) but despite all the gear and commitment (Zi and Willy didn’t sleep the night before fishing for live bait) we failed to catch anything huge. Everyone did catch something though, that’s always a good thing.

I didn’t get sea sick (came pretty close at dinner time though as we were parked up at the mouth of the ocean overnight in search for monster fish) but I did get super dehydrated after downing way too many Asahi’s before lunch time, which brought on a nasty migrain headache which I had to sleep off. I did a LOT of sleeping on this trip, as Zi put it “Eat Sleep Fish!”.

Tenpin Bowling

Jess Lock.

Ugliest bowling shoes ever.

Norman and Amanda.

Cuz’s.

Suga.

Jess doesn’t look too happy.

Me in my bowling shirt (it comes out once a year haha).

On a break between games the girls though it would be fun to do cartwheels…pretty random!

Moody. I like this photo!

Like this one too.

Last night we hit Strike for 3 games of Tenpin Bowling with a pro (Amanda, Norman’s girl who’s a pro bowler!). Yah, she was very good but Thomas (Christina’s cousin) managed to beat her in one of the 3 games which was pretty impressive too. Suga, as usual, used the kiddies ramp for bowling for the last 2 games, and me, well I just got tanked (beer + bowling goes hand in hand!).

Personal Training

No! Not more boxing!

I’m still half asleep here. Suga getting me back for taking a shot of her (funny how we’re all wearing red and black too!).

Frenchie’s low and sexy Candy White R36 wagon.

Suga and I started up personal training late last year with Frenchie (who’s a Personal Trainer and moderator of our VWGolf.net.au Forums). I’d done personal training in the past and it was great until I pushed myself a little too hard in one session and did my back in. My back’s still pretty weak but Frenchie’s been awesome already in helping me to learn some exercises which will help me strengthen it.

Frenchie’s after some graphic design work in exchange for training sessions (perfect!) so it’s looking like we’ll be keeping it up :)

NYE

Viewing the fireworks right under the bridge. Strange perspective as we were standing behind the bridge and fireworks were going off to the right of us, loud though which was cool.

Suga and I.

Suga and I hit Harbour Party at Luna Park this year for NYE (with her girl friends).

We were at the bus stop with a group of young guys who were already drinking up and when the bus stopped (and lowered down) in Randwick for an old fella with a disability to get on one of them yelled out “Fucking hell hurry up!”. Great way to start the night…

Harbour Party was an over 18’s event, so no kiddies, and since tix were pricey it also meant less Westies (though I spotted a few of them off their faces and harassing people at 8pm heading down to Milsons Point Park) but since it was a primo location for the fireworks it brought in a very mixed crowd. Mums and daughters, 30’s, 40’s and even older Indian ladies with huge SLR’s around their necks. The carnival atmosphere was pretty strange too, street performers in whack costumes, etc. There were free rides all night but I wasn’t up for it, the music was so so, dance floors were awesome and lights were pretty good too.

In the end I got tired (old man!) and at 1.30am I wanted to bail to avoid the rush outta there when it shut down at 3, turns out there were still hundreds of families trying to get out from the park (the poor kiddies!) and it took ages for us to get anywhere near the train station entrance! Christina and I decided gto stay on the train until Eastwood and crash at her parents place rather than get off a town hall and catch a bus out to Maroubra.

All in all it was a different experience, wouldn’t suggest it to anyone but can’t say I’ve ever been that close to the fireworks before, ever and I didn’t have anything else planned so…all good!

Wedding

Car & bike friends FTW.

Me wearing a suit? No waaaaay. Jonno, me, suga + Andy. Photo by Quentin Mui.

Photobooth set-up at the reception (great idea!). Photo by Mark Pakula.

Christina and I were the MC’s at the reception of our friends wedding, and whilst we had been nervous about it for the past few days we had a ball once we got going. Yeah we stuffed a few things up, but hey, the laugh was on us!

As soon as our MC’ing was done the party started and in typical Christina vs Justin fashion we both had a race to see who would get wasted first (so the other would have to drive). In the end we were both smashed and with the wedding party ending all of a sudden (time always flies when you’re in the zone right?!) we were left trying to straighten up over a massive greasy meal at a City Extra, a 24hr cafe (always wanted to eat there!). By 1am I was finally straight enough to drive home haha.

Ordinary Extraordinary – Quiet Achievements & Heroic Feats

I’ve been working on this project with Caryn Gillespie for the past few weeks. Caryn and I used to do a lot of pro-bono work together (I always saw it as stocking up on good Karma!). It’s been a while since we’ve worked on something together and when she called me up with this idea I was sold straight away.

The project is called “Ordinary Extraordinary”. The concept is simple; to feature every day people who are doing extraordinary things. One photo and one person’s acknowledgement. Initially Ordinary Extraordinary will be a gallery event up north but it will continue on as it’s own project online.

Here’s the call out (please pass this on!):

Do you know anyone extraordinary? Is there someone you would like to acknowledge? This is your opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge people who make a difference in your life and the lives of others.

Quiet achievements and heroic feats equally welcome!

Body piercing goodness

Christina.

Jess.

I got up early yesterday to see Byron off and after that I went back to bed until 4pm to catch up on some much needed sleep. Whilst I was out Christina and her younger sister Jess went into the city and got some piercings! Christina got her belly done and Jess got her nose done. Later that night we went over to the Locks for diner, took Mumma Lock a LONG time to realise the nose piercing and the reaction after seeing Christina’s belly piercing was gold. Poor mumma!

Friday daze

New Westfield Centrepoint.

I had 2 bad night sleeps in a row, way too much beer and smokes and the car show absolutely killed my legs (strange!) somehow I managed to (just) keep on rolling. Yesterday we planned to hit the beach but it was a crap day so Jess, Byron, Christina and I hit the city to check out the new Westfield Centrepoint.

Parts of the centre reminded me of some big Asian malls, maybe Hong Kong and Singapore. My mum ran a fashion business in Centrepoint for many years so as kids my sister and I practically grew up in the heart of the city. I didn’t at all recognise any of the old Centrepoint though, they’ve really gone all out on the new centre. It’s still dark like the old but each store front has it’s own concept (unlike the old centre having generic shop designs on the outside), some of the shop designs are pretty rad too.

New fixie shop at the Galleries Victoria.

Later that afternoon Christina and I hit the refurbished Strawberry Hills Hotel. I was feeling pretty tired until they served me this cool bottle of Asahi. Made in Japan unlike the made in Thailand Asahi everyone else seems to be stocking. Makes me so happy.

We then hit Jazushi, a small Japanese fusion restaurant in Surry Hills. We’ve walked past before and wondered if it was any good, turns out the food was awesome, we’ll definitely be back for more. We were there for Michael’s B’day, Michael and his partner Kerri run fashion label Amar. Really nice people and they’ve got some really interesting friends which made for a great night.
