The Jury

Totally random, but totally awesome. Simon McIntyre, whom I went to Design School with, just posted this up on Facebook. It’s an album that Shannon, Arron and I recorded and distributed on cassette tape circa 1993, or so (?!). I remember cutting and pasting the cassette cover using art from a Heavy Metal comic book, kinda digging the hand drawn logo design too!

I’ve still got the original recordings online. I’m on guitar, and it’s me singing (if you can call it that), Shannon Taylor on drums, Arron Fletcher on Bass. If you care to listen visit: https://soundcloud.com/justin-fox-27/sets/the-jury

Natacha Merritt

Signed, sealed, delivered, she’s mine!

One of the lesser explicit spreads.

I’ve been a Natacha Merritt fan since picking up her first book at Ariel bookstore in 2000. It was so confronting (even for me!) that I had to have it. I even remember being a little shy to hand it over the counter due to how explicit it was.

In 2002 I got to meet her when she came out to AGIdeas conference in Melbourne (here’s a photo of her and I), and despite a lot of people writing her work off as porn not art I was all the more convinced she’s the real deal.

A few weeks ago I got an email from her publisher in relation to her new book. I’ve not kept in touch with what Natacha’s been doing since 2002, turns out she’s now a biologist and her latest book Sexual Selection compares and contrasts the sexual intricacies of plants and insects with her own elaborate sexuality.

It’s awesome. I love it. Not everyone’s cup of tea, definitely not for the everyday coffee table, but definitely sits proud on mine :)

The Chemical Brothers – Don’t Think

V8 YO!

Sean treated me to a showing of The Chemical Brothers – Don’t Think last night at Event Cinemas in the city. I’m a HUGE Chemical Brothers fan (they got me into electronic music after metal… and chemical abuse too naturally) so I was pretty hyped up about the event, especially after reading a little about it (tried not to, but couldn’t help myself). Shot in Japan with an aim to capture the audience go through highs of their set AND captured in Dolby 7.1… it all sounded like a HUGE prick tease (what are we meant to do in a cinema? Get up and dance?!)

Dance, people did, but just 5 minutes in Sean and I knew something was drastically wrong. Whilst the audience were screaming to turn it up, the volume wasn’t the problem… the problem was there was NO BASS. I mean, seriously, no bass. NO BASS! No feeling! Sean ran out to complain a few times, eventually the cinema manager came in and agreed the sound was wrong but there was nothing she could do about it.

Sigh. What a waste… :(

Ear infection

Hope you’re not eating your breakfast whilst reading this.

Every few years my ears get blocked form ear wax. Ewwwww, yeah. My old doctor told me not to use earbuds to clean out my ears, seems like when I do use them they just push the wax further in and that causes the blockage. I’ve had my ears flushed out twice before, basically I use ear drops for a week, then the doctor flushes out the build up wax with a huge syringe filled with hot water.

A few days ago I found myself picking at my right ear. I think I was half asleep? I tried to clean my ear out with an earbud and yep, fucked my ear up good. I had to go in to see the doctor to get a shot in any case (Jamie’s baby is popping out tomorrow so the whole family has gotten whooping cough shots in preparation) so I had him have a lok at it, and too right, it turns out I have an ear infection.

Same drill, ear drops for a week then he’ll flush shit out. As soon as I got home I used the ear drops on the right ear, then the left. As a result I’ve lost all hearing in my left ear and I can only just barely hear with my right. I’ve been in a strange place the past 2 days, it’s amazing how out of whack I feel considering there’s nothing at all wrong with me otherwise. I missed the INfront Apple Talk at the Apple store last night because I just didn’t feel confident to go out into the world with poor hearing, and tonight I’ve got the Senna screening which I absolutely have to attend… it’s going to be interesting!

EDIT: Hot water + a syringe did the trick (you don’t want to know about the amounts of wax that came out, crazy gross!) and now I can hear again! Like never before. YAY! It’s like turning the treble up. Even the clicking of the keys on my keyboard, mouse, and when I walk the rustling of my clothes. BIONIC!

Finally on Twitter

Yup.

I’ve avoided it for so long but twittering INfront news posts for the past few months, coupled with agreeing to twitter for Cycling Express has worn down my force field and I’ve given in and created a twitter account.

I was pissed off straight off the bat that I couldn’t get my own name as a user name (damn you Justin Foxes!) but I’ve settled for justinfoxAU and I’ve managed to hook it into this WordPress blog too.

Whether I’ll actually use it to burn my life away and/or read what the people I’m following are saying only time will tell. Visit: http://twitter.com/#!/justinfoxAU

Everything by Luke Cleland

That’s Luke on the left.

I got the news today that a friend’s song has made it through to JJJ’s Unearthed Top 50. It’s rating 44th overall in the Unearthed charts (17 in its genre) but the idea’s to get the song into the top 10 so that it enters high rotation.

Listen (or you can download it for free) to his track “Everything” here: http://www.triplejunearthed.com/LukeCleland

And if you could be assed. Register on JJJ to write a review and/or rate it.

GOstralia!

That’s what the F1 global web site looks like this very moment. Oh yes, makes me feel so proud to be an Aussie right about now.

Camera update

OK I’ll be honest and say that the very next day after losing my GF1 I hopped on Google to do some more solid GF1 vs GF2 reviews. The reason why I bought the GF1 over the Olympus is that the GF1’s 20mm pancake lens rocks my socks off. The Olympus took crap shots until I put the GF1 lens on it and that closed the deal for me. The GF2 is lighter, smaller but what’s really sad about the new GF2 is that it doesn’t come with the 20mm pancake lens.

Deal breaker!

With the help of some of those nasty price comparison sites I found myself a good deal on a GF1 for $700 shipped with an upgraded memory card. I pulled the trigger on it with express shipping, it should have gotten to me today.

BUT.

I got an email today from the overseas shop telling me that they’ve run out of stock on the GF1, would I like to upgrade to a GF2? Bad vibes bad vibes! I replied to their email asking for a refund, also hopped onto their site to live chat with a representative to again confirm my refund. Eventually I got an email confirmation stating that my money has been refunded and it should turn up in my Paypal account soon.

Having sorted that out I took note of Khoa’s Facebook offer of getting me one for $640 and also Saad’s comment about getting his for $650 from Harvey Norman. I called Harvey Norman in Bondi and they didn’t have any GF1’s. I got the guy to check other stores and unfortunately they had none at all in the system. I contacted Khoa who works at Harvey Norman and it turns out there was one left in the stock room at his shop so it’s all mine!

I’ll be picking it up off him (I’m hoping it’s a black one, didn’t even ask…will settle for white if need be though!) next Sunday at the JDMST/TLD EOMM – good times up ahead!
