HELP! I love my Squier more than my Fender Stratocaster…

Monday Morning Rant.

I bought a Korean made Squier Stratocaster in the late 90’s as a bit of a joke. I was super into metal back then and owned a fair few shredder type guitars (black guitars, pointy shapes, humbuckers, floyd rose trems and thin necks etc.), but this thing was all cream and curvy, and to me at least, it was so damn ugly that I had to have it!

Fast forward a fair bit and I really grew to love the Squier. I love how it looks, how it feels, how it sounds. The guitar changed the music I listened to as well as the music I was playing. It became my main guitar.

For the past 15+ years I’ve dreamed of owning the real deal. IE: An American made Fender Stratocaster and earlier this month I finally bought one. A brand new Fender American Professional II Stratocaster.

Just owning the American Strat feels great. The satin finish on the back of the neck feels absolutely amazing. The unique Dark Night finish is beautiful…

BUT…

I still prefer playing my Squier.

The neck on the Squier is way thinner and way faster, I feel a lot more expressive on it. I’ve spent so much time over the past few weeks playing one, then instantly playing the other and damn, the Squier feels and sounds better EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!

The random stuff I come up with on the Squier just flows out so easily, but not so on the Fender.

The Fender doesn’t stay in tune anywhere near as well as my Squier as it has a floating bridge (my Squier’s tremolo is decked), and as much as I really didn’t want to modify the Fender at all I made the move to change out the strings to the same gauge as my Squier (8 gauge), decked the tremolo, tuned a whole step down to D (same as my Squier), drop the neck pickup to the same height as my Squier (almost flush with the pickguard) and since doing this it definitely does feel and sound a lot better but it still doesn’t sound or feel as good as my Squier.

HELP!

I do not at all regret buying the Fender. Maybe if I play it more I’ll love it more? Maybe the Fender is like owning a Ferrari, a car you love to look at, love to own, love to drive on weekends, but then prefer to be invisible in the Honda Civic when stuck in traffic and doing the groceries?!

Monday Morning Rant

I updated to macOS Big Sur last night and now nothing works. Photoshop, Bridge, my SLR as a webcam. FUCK ME!

I’ve been watching a whole lot of SOFT WHITE UNDERBELLY on YouTube. Mark Laita is a professional photographer who’s done work for Apple, BMW, Coca-Cola, McDonalds and more, but he started shooting people on Skid Row, and then he started interviewing them, now that’s what he does full time.

On SOFT WHITE UNDERBELLY he interviews heroin addicts, porn actresses, prostitutes, pimps, homeless people, sex offenders and more. It’s raw AF, a hardcore insight into why people choose to self destruct.

Goodbye Buzzsprout

I’ve made the call to terminate my monthly subscription to Buzzsprout, a service which hosts my podcasts and seeds them onto other platforms like Spotify etc. Buzzsprout run a Facebook “community” which IMHO has been a complete waste of time as you’re not allowed to promote or discuss your podcasts with others who use the Buzzsprout service, so instead people end up asking really generic, safe, boring and useless questions.

Last week the moderators put this message up:

Moving forward, there will be ZERO tolerance for soliciting this group with your goods or services.

There are no warnings and you will be banned from the group after your first offense.

It doesn’t matter if someone is asking for an editor and you simply offer your editing services. Our group is not the place to promote your own services.

Acceptable:
“Does anyone know of a podcast editor?” Yes, I used We Edit Podcasts and really liked them

Not Acceptable:
“Does anyone know of a podcast editor?” Yes, I am one. DM me.

I replied in the comments with “Way to kill your community guys! Good one!!!!!” and got this response from a moderator: “Justin Fox this won’t kill the community, but it may become a little more quiet; that’s totally fine. Much preferred actually.
A few well thought out, high quality responses will provide more value than dozens of low quality replies every time”.

Gotta love that snide reply huh?!

“There are no warnings and you will be banned from the group after your first offense.” – This is the bit that doesn’t sit right with me. I’ve founded and run a few successful communities in my career and not once ever did we ever have such a black and white rule as this. To this date I’ve spent $180 US Dollars on their service and I’m glad they won’t be getting another dollar out of me in future!

Monday Morning Rant

Oops, focus.

“I’m 46, hit rock bottom a few years ago, got help, therapy, meds then finally I quit smoking weed. That was a huge step. Soon after quitting weed I got off the meds. A year off the meds and I’ve quit smoking nicotine. Now I’m working on drinking less. You either get mentally stronger, or you don’t”.

I left this comment on a Joe Rogan clip on YouTube yesterday and it looks like I got a fair few responses so I thought I’d read them all out this morning.
