My ex-gf and business partner of 7 years Caryn Gillespie has just set up new accommodation at Byron Bay. Her touch is on everything, the place looks amazing!

She’s offering an introductory offer of $250/night (That’s a steal! I’ll be there soon!!!). She’s only just set up her Instagram page, please check out and follow: https://www.instagram.com/sundaysatbyron/

PS: She’s looking for influencers to help promote her new apartments so if you know anyone keen on a getaway (couples would be good!) please tag them in the comments below!

I’ve done my time with Graphic Design

A few months ago I soft launched my new Design Studio Threesome PTY LTD. Initially we were doing great! We got a fair few small $500 jobs in the door without much trouble, low budgets, but at that early stage we were just willing to take on anything just to see how we all got along.

Then the wheels started coming off.

A few months in and we’re still working on some of those $500 jobs. Graphic Design isn’t easy. Sometimes you hit the nail on the head first go, sometimes you do so many iterations you feel like shit for not being able to do what the client wants.

All clients want it done yesterday but take a week to give you feedback. Not all clients are educated, not all clients want to be educated. Some clients want bad design, or worse, to sit over your shoulder and for you to be a mac operator.

I’ve realised it’s so important for me to keep my morale up and my ego healthy in order for me to continue doing work for others, as working on stuff which I’m embarrassed about. IE: stuff I would never put in my portfolio, is what’s going to kill all my passion and motivation to do good work.

About 10 years ago I was doing banner adverts for $400/banner. These crunched down gif animations took me all of 10–15 minutes to do and get approved. That’s $400 for 10 minutes worth of work, but after a while I lost my shit, had enough and dropped the job. Why? It’s because I’ve been doing banner adverts since day 1, the late 90’s and I never fucking want to do one ever again. IE: I’ve done my time!

So now I’m sacking some clients. IE: I’m giving up on some jobs that are almost over the finish line. Why? Because I have to in order to stay true to myself, to stay sane.

End of the day I’ve been here before. I’ve run a successful design company in the past, and I’m not so sure why I’m back here again, trying to make a mark that I’ve already made. It’s still early days for Threesome, but I’ve thrown a spanner into the works already. My 2 partners and the team we’ve built are listening, together we’re already changing directions towards photography/content creation and social media management, all of which are potentially lucrative and creatively challenging.

We’re still going to do design work, but only for brands we admire and clients that we legit want to work with. Saying no to design work we feel isn’t a good fit for our design culture shouldn’t be too hard to do, but finding the right clients that do fit in with our ethos won’t be so easy, but we know they’re out there!

SO excited when I came across this image on Facebook. Aleks is a kid I’ve known for YEARS. When I first met him he might have been, like 16, he was at an old EOMM at IS Motor Racing, and he had a JDM Style Tuning sticker on his… bicycle!!!

He’s getting into sign writing, which totally caught me off guard! I’m so excited for the guy!

Last night he came around and we had a killer catch up (been waaaaay too long!). Can’t wait to get him paid to make up some signs for us (Threesome, ZEN, etc!).

Keiichi Tsuchiya T-Shirt progress

KEIICHI_TSUCHIYA_LOGO_FRONT_POCKET
Front “pocket” print.

Just sharing some process/progress on the Keiichi Tsuchiya T-Shirt I’m designing for WTAC this year.

The shield logo on the right appears for a split second in the 2003 Drift Bible DVD (and also on the DVD jacket design). I’ve decided to use it on the front pocket of the T-Shirt (saving the big cross design for a large back print). I’ve taken inspiration from MASH for the shield shape and the OG Keiichi cross logo (left). Not 100% sure on the shield shape just yet, might tweak it to look a little bit more like the original shield (right).

More updates as they come!

Keiichi Tsuchiya T-Shirt mood board

driftking_moodboard

I’m working on the official Keiichi Tsuchiya T-Shirt for World Time Attack Challenge this year. I had the opportunity last year but I was in a hole and failed to even get started on a design.

This year I’m on it early AF and determined to get it right.

I want to take it back to where it all began. Best Motoring released The Drift Bible DVD in 2003 where Keiichi runs viewers through 6 different drift techniques.

These days you’d be hard pressed to find any video content of that length for any one driver. Mad Mike? Most I’ve seen is a few clips only a few minutes long, Keiichi? He had a whole DVD to himself! That DVD was fucking amazing to us at the time (it will forever live on my shelf in the lounge room!).

I’ve created a mood board. Top half are grabs from the DVD. I love love love the cross design so I’m most likely going to work on that being a part of the T, if not the whole design for the T. At the bottom there’s a few previous T designs. I hate all the illustration/caricature designs as none of them look like him, and caricature’s are usually known for being ugly bastardisations of people in general so I’ll definitely be avoiding that.

I love the bottom right corner logo he used for Kei Office, might use part of that for the design, maybe even on the sleeve. Either way I’m pumped and can’t wait to knock this design out! More process/progress updates soon!

Meeting with WTAC yesterday didn’t go down like I thought it would…

When you’re on the inside you really get to see how hardcore running a huge event like WTAC really is. What you think you know about WTAC gets thrown out the door, and the reality of finding sponsorship money to run the beast becomes excruciatingly clear.

I’ll be designing the new Keiichi Tsuchiya T-Shirt this year, but that’s about it (I’m VERY excited about this as DK is a God to me). Alain Sihaphone has the rest of WTAC covered. Big job, but he’s a big man, so all good!!!

WTAC 2019

logo_wtac

Monday Funday! I’m meeting up with Ian Baker and Alain Sihaphone today to discuss design and marketing ideas for WTAC 2019.

For huge reasons, WTAC almost didn’t happen this year… DO NOT BE one of those people that end up saying “Oh I wish I went to WTAC when it was on…”

I get a LOT of these comments in regards to the old ZEN Garage shop in Leichhardt; “oh wish I went when it was open”, regret is lame AF, and most of the time it can be avoided, so less excuses, just do what you have to do to get to WTAC this year ’cause IMHO, it’s hands down the best automotive event we have on the calendar each year.
