Derailleur hanger straightening session

Ash getting it straight.

Ash (head mechanic at MC Cyclery) came over last night to work on my bikes (what a champ!). He brought over this big tool which he says is the tool to buy if you’re ever going to buy a tool! It was a Park DAG-2 hanger alignment gauge and it’s used to check to see if the derailleur hanger on the bike is out of whack and it’s also used to align it so it’s not out of whack.

It turns out both my Anthem and my Reign were out (the Anthem by a good inch or so) and even the brand new Azzurri roadie was out! It explains why sometimes, even with a new straight hanger I failed to tune the gears 100% perfect.

Bike

In 2008 I designed and printed up a few of these “Bike” T’s mainly for myself and to hand out as freebies to mates. I’ve since been asked by so many people (even people overseas as I like to pack one in the luggage on trips!) to make more so I’ve done just that.

I’ve got 50 T’s and I’m keeping 10 smalls for myself which leaves 10 small, 20 medium and 10 large.

Price: $35 shipped Australia wide ($5 less for pick-up).

Return to Menai

Today I rode Menai with the MCC guys (Ash and Maisey). Maisey does a different loop to the one I’m used to, this time around we parked right out the front of the nuclear reactor (great huh?) which is up the road from the tip (which you can smell for the first 5 minutes of the trail). Nice trail though until we got lost! We spent 3 hours in there trying to find our way out, fun times haha.

A few pics with the old pocket camera (I doubt I’d ever take the new GF-1 along on a ride):

Parking across from the nuclear reactor.

5 minutes in and Ash has submerged a whole foot into the mud.

Maisey: “Yeah I’m just riding Menai at the moment”.

We came across some sketchy looking freeride structures and found this stash of porn that the trail fairies had left at the site.

Deus

Today Christina and I caught up with Sonny and Mina at Deus Cafe which continues to do well judging by how busy it was. They were having a clothing sale in the carpark too (where I managed to pick up a jacket and shirt). Every time I visit Deus that urge to buy another motorbike kicks into gear (I’ve had a couple and still have a license to ride). A few years back I really wanted a Honda Zoomer and now that I can buy one through Deus (at a reasonable $4k too) I find myself not really wanting one anymore.

Deus – breeding and spreading tasteful bike culture to the Sydney masses.

Today this would be my bike of choice. I’m not sure I have clothes cool enough to be seen riding on it though.

A shot looking into their workshop. Note the Japanese bike culture magazines on the table? It’s no secret that Dare Jennings (founder of Mambo) was inspired by bikes he saw on a trip to Japan, so much so that it led to him founding Deus in Sydney and building customised Japanese bikes.

The rumour out there is that the Deus Cafe does better than selling bikes and T-Shirts combined. It doesn’t surprise me, this eggs benny was delicious!

Downs and Ups

Yesterday I somehow managed to get through every single email that I had missed whilst in China. I didn’t reply to them all but I’ve read the lot and I’ve added a LOT of things to do in my calendar for the week. I had a few glasses of red last night too and was deep in sleep when the phone rang at 8.50AM. We haven’t got an answering machine and this caller was persistent.

During our overseas trip Christina’s Mum gave us a wake-up call every single morning so I assumed it was her. Christina got up and it turns out it was for me (oops). It was Daniel from Azzurri bikes. Him and George (the big boss from Taiwan) were in Sydney to launch their 2011 range. They had a display for dealers set-up at the airport and they invited me down to check it out.

I spent the morning and early afternoon working on more emails (and China blog updates in between) but late afternoon I headed out to check out the bikes:

The full 2010 range on display.

Killer fixie which has won a World Championship race, thus it’s allowed to wear the world cup stripes.

Hot tri bike.

A while back I designed the entire range of clothing for Azzurri and they had it all there, in the flesh which was awesome to see.

Daniel and George then pointed me over to this beastie which is all mine as a token of thanks for designing their range of clothing! I’ll be sure to post up better photos and a ride report too ASAP. Nice to know I’m the first in the country to own one!

OK now onto some BAD news. On the way back home from the show (with my new bike in the boot!) we dropped in to McDonalds as both Christina and I were starving (we missed lunch). On the way into the drive-through I heard that sound that fucks my world up. Yup… I guttered a rim.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!! I posted the news on Facebook and Pakula left a reply which nails it: “Oh noes. Worst feeling ever.”. Yup I know there are people dying but right now I can’t think about anything else. I’m definitely going to lose sleep over this tonight.

I didn’t have too much time to feel sorry for myself though. My sister Jamie and Richie came over and we were off to Riverwood to check out a litter of baby Russian Blue’s. Christina and I have a Doberman on order, but before we wanted a dog we wanted a Russian Blue and somehow, all of a sudden, Christina really wanted one (again) so she’d called around and found one for sale.

I’ve been to a few cat shows and pet breeders and it’s definitely another world out there (to say the least). I swear you could do a doco on pet breeders and their homes. They’re mostly messy, awards pinned on every free bit of space, the sharp smell of cat urine and freaky cat people. But this was altogether a different experience. We were greeted by a cool guy who held his Boxer back (hey cat and dog owners. Animal lovers!) and we walked into a super clean apartment and were greeted by mamma Russian Blue (Misha), her babies were playing all over their couch.

It turns out that they were a young couple who had a female Russian Blue, hired a male stud to get her pregnant and with guidance from a vet they brought up a litter of 3. 2 of them had been sold (a boy and a girl) and we were checking out the last girl for sale:

OMFG.

Yup… how can you resist?

Half an hour later we had put a deposit down. She’s ours in 3 weeks!

Apparently the Russian Blue is much less of an allergen source than other breeds of cat and amazingly Christina (who is super allergic to cats) didn’t at all have any allergic reactions from playing with all 4 cats (so it must be true?!). For a good part of an hour I had forgotten my guttered rim but alas, as I write this I’m now again feeling shit about it. I’ll have to get it fixed or I’ll endlessly have to have a good gawk at the damage every single time I’m near the car.

PS: I’ve taken all the above pics with my new camera! SLR? Yah I finally did it… kinda?! More on the new toy soon :)

Link Dump

Whilst I’m on the bike thing (I promise to get to other things too!) I thought I’d post up some links to great sites which I’ve bookmarked over the past few weeks.

Velo Orange
Chris runs a very focused small business. I love pretty much everything he sells from the funky leather chainstay protectors (I’ve got one on order!) to this very elegant water bottle cage.

Revolution Cycle Jewelry
Jen makes some beautiful bicycle head badges. I can’t wait to design my own one and get her to craft it up for my beastie (though this design would already be pretty damn perfect!).

Swobo
Love the stuff these guys make. The Folsom is just awesome. I love the sexy gusset and quirky bottle opener under the seat. Fresh!

defgrip
Cool blog that covers BMX culture, which I love as it’s very much similar to skateboard culture (which I love). Pick up a skate magazine and a BMX magazine and you’ll realise a lot of it’s got to do with style and dynamic photography.

Rodafixa
Great Hong Kong based fixie focussed blog. Although most other cycling cultures are far from BMX and Skateboarding culture, fixie culture is pretty much there. Also check: funny article on being a fixie clone, fast boy fenders make very nice wooden fenders, Cadence makes nice things.

BikeCAD
Toy around with designing your own bicycle with BikeCAD which works online if you have Java installed. Lots of fun and Jing and I are contemplating making out own bikes as we have the right contacts in the automotive industry to make it all happen.

Hardrock progress

OK so the Hardrock, despite being powder coated white, is looking more Death Metal at the moment, which is kinda the look I was going for. It’s got a new skool front end, lucky for me the old Hardrock had a 1 1/8th steerer so it allowed me to go from threaded to non threaded. New skool suspension (I’ve never owned suspension on a bicycle before!) and new skool brakes up front.

I’m still waiting on some parts as you can see in the picture above. A new crankset is on (though not in the picture) and so too a single speed kit (I know it’s a trend at the moment, I’m loving the moment though!).

Also, I’m converting the rear end as well now into a disc brake set-up. I’ve bought a cheap disc brake adaptor on eBay (as my frame has no rear disc mounts), a new fatter rear tyre and I’m already trying to hunt down bargain basement 2nd hand parts (disc hub rear rim and rear disc brake).

Expenses to date:
06 WTB CXC riser bars $20
Wellgo C002 MTB Cleats Bike Pedals $33.52
FSA Pig DH-Pro Headset 1-1/8 $32.95
Maxxis High Rollers 26×2.5 60A $24.95
Hayes HFX Nine Front disc brake $70
DMR Chain Guide $43.70
Weinmann 26″ front disc wheel $46
Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 2’s $150
Imperial iGrip2 $15
BiLT Busta stem $19
Tioga MC Lite Saddle $28
Fire Eye Single Speed kit $50
Shimano Hone Crankset/bb $146
Total: $679.12

Hardrock

I’ve been meaning to get fit. I’m not the kind of person who has the discipline to go to the gym (Fitness First? No thanks, maybe if it was called “Fitness Second” I’d be keen!) so choosing a “sport” that I could “get into” was cruicial. I tried to get back into skating again a few years ago with Ash, but after falling on my tailbone real hard at Maroubra Skate Park I called it a day.

A few weeks ago I found this under the house (literally). It’s not THAT old, a 1996 or 97 Specialized Hardrock. I do remember buying it from Woolys Wheels and I always intended to use it just to get around but I never did use it that much. I used to be super into bikes as a kid. I did the Sydney to Wollongong twice (4hrs 14minutes was my best time) and I also competed in the Bell Nationals (Mountain Bike comp) so getting back on the bike seemed like a good idea.

I cleaned up the Hardrock a little bit and decided to take it to the local bike store for a service, when they saw it they were more excited than I was! I thought it was pretty dead, rust here, there and pretty much everywhere but they thought it was in mint condition for it’s age. They even called it a “vintage” (which made me feel vintage).

Whilst it was being serviced I found myself doing what I do best… getting obsessive compulsive with it! A new hobby! Yes of-course! Those who know me know that I don’t do things in halves. I found that new bikes have come a long way since the 90’s. I couldn’t even get a new stem for this bike as the systems have totally changed. I started hunting down vintage parts on eBay and at the same time I started planning something different.

When I got the bike back it was riding well, but of-course I wasn’t happy with it as is. I love modifying cars, and modifying a bicycle was going to be a natural process for me so I bought a bike stand, some bike tools and got busy dissmantling (now that was fun!) and more importantly researching.

Whilst I knew that I could buy a decent modern bike new for $500, none of them appealed to me, if anything I’d buy one and put another $500 into it to make it my own. So I decided to spend about $500 on the old Hardrock, have some fun on the way and see what comes out of it.

And fun it’s been! I think about bikes when I put my head on the pillow at night. I’m driving Christina crazy. I have a mate Jing who’s just as obsessive comulsive about bikes at the moment as I am (always a good thing to have a mate to dive into a new hobby with), I’m active on a bicycle forum and the bike itself has turned into something else.

It’s a true juxtaposition. It’s old and new, built up from many 2nd hand garage sale goods, eBay junk and a few new bits in there too. It’s a work in progress which I am documenting here. I’m also up to my usual shit stirring, a vent always helps to release the pressure and have a laugh :)
